‘Write’ job to meet celebrities

Fascinating stories from a career covering sport proved inspirational to The Vale Academy’s Year 8 Scholars’ Programme students.

Former BBC journalist Charles Runcie told stories of meeting icons such as David Beckham, Michael Owen and Sebastian Coe when he visited the school to discuss his life and career.

Charles has travelled the world doing something he loves: writing.

One time Head of Sport for BBC English Regions, he has covered many sports events in places such as Beijing, Barcelona and South Africa.

English teacher Nicola Elvin said: “Our students asked some interesting questions concerning journalism and how he first became involved in writing.

“The students were fascinated to hear his stories of meeting great sports personalities like David Beckham, Michael Owen and Sebastian Coe.

“Charles also spoke about how difficult it is to become a journalist and advised our Scholars’ Programme students on how best to gain experience and make their mark.

“He gave tips, shared writing ideas and encouraged our students to follow their dreams.”

Scholars’ Programme students now have the challenge to write an interesting article about an element of their school life because of the inspiration gained from Charles’ visit.

“I look forward to reading them and, who knows, they might just make the next edition of Vale Views!” said Miss Elvin.
