Literacy and Numeracy
All students in Years 7 and 8 are assessed for their reading ages. We aim to promote a love of reading through our curriculum and ensure all students become confident, independent readers. Upon entry to Year 7, students with the lowest literacy skills receive an additional two hours per week of reading support as an alternative to MFL. In addition, there are a range of bespoke reading strategies in Y7-11 to support individuals eg. Corrective Reading and Toe by Toe. All students have access to independent reading during tutor time and also as part of their English lessons in Years 7-9.
Every child at The Vale has access to Hegarty Maths, an online programme. Students are set specific tasks to complete as homework but do not access Hegarty maths in class. Students identified as falling behind age related expectations attend after school intervention and also benefit from additional small group tuition during maths lessons.
Our learning mentors in English and Maths offer small group and individual support for identified students from Y7-11.
