Resources and facilities

Within the department we have two workshop areas for multi-media work, an ICT room which includes a laser cutter, Die cutter 3d printer, CNC machine and a sublimation printer and we have a Food room, which allows a full class to cook together, as well as a Food demonstration room. We also have facilities for textile studies which is taught through the Design and Technology curriculum

KS3

In Key Stage 3 in Design and Technology we offer opportunities for students to:

  • develop their designing and making skills;
  • develop knowledge and understanding of materials, components and structures;
  • nurture creativity and innovation through designing and making;
  • explore values about and attitudes to the made world and how we live, work and interact within it;
  • develop a critical understanding of technological processes, products and their manufacture, and how they contribute to our society;
  • prepare for making a contribution to life and work in a technological society;
  • relate and apply knowledge and understanding from across the curriculum;
  • develop confidence and enjoyment in the design process;
  • seek to stimulate imagination and inventiveness through the student’s first-hand experience and by reference to the imaginative work of others;
  • appreciate and value individual responses in their own right;
  • provide opportunities for students to experiment, initiate, make choices and act on them.

Key Stage 4

  • Students opt from the range of courses in both Design and Technology
  • Courses currently offered at GCSE in Design and Technology area
  • GCSE Food Preparation and Nutrition Eduqas
  • Assessment- 2 Controlled assessment tasks one worth 15% and the other 25% . Written exam 50%
  • GCSE Design and Technology  AQA
  • Assessment- Controlled assessment Design and Make project 50% written exam 50%
  • NCFE LEVEL 2 Technical award in graphic design 4 internal units and 1 classroom based practical exam

Key stage 5

AQA Product Design Assessment- Controlled assessment Design and Make project 50% written exam paper 1 30% paper 2 20%

Extra Curricular 

A Level Visits – Visits to university design departments and conference. 

GCSE Food Visit – Students visit the catering facilities at Grimsby Institute. 

Key Stage 3 After School Club – Students will work on an individual or team project of their own choice and materials. 

 Year 8 – Actuation sequence challenge. 
As a team the year 8 students compete to produce an actuation sequence. They have to base their design on a chosen theme and include the four main movements. Reciprocating, linear, oscillating and rotary. The competition runs throughout the year and prizes will be given to winning team.  
 
Year 7and 8 Chefs of the Year  
At the end of the school year students will be selected to receive Chef of the Year prizes.  The students will need to show they have been independent and resilient throughout their food lessons.
